Comparison is the killer of Joy

I am not sure if you ever heard this sentence. I heard it a couple of months ago and it hit me like a brick. I started to ponder it. Imagine a little raven or a hummingbird, two cute animals, thinking they are not worth it or deserving of anything because they don’t have colorful feathers like a peacock. On the other hand, the peacock is frustrated because he doesn’t fly as high as an eagle. The beauty of mother nature that brings us so much joy would be killed if animals would compare each other.

Human beings have an advanced brain compared to birds, “theoretically” 😉. Yet occasionally we may not make good use of those neuro cells. When we mix thoughts and emotions guided by limited beliefs, we can really take the joy out of our lives. That is when that sentence comes to play. We are here to share our talents and skills with the world and we all do it in a unique way.

I started a new professional path this year as a Life and Career Coach. I am now in a mastery certification program with coaches from all over the world. I am fascinated by the different backgrounds of the coaches I have met on this journey. There are project managers, engineers, IT people, nurses, doctors, and all kinds of professionals who are looking for a new way to help people. Now imagine if we started to think that one background is better than another to become a good coach. We don’t know anyone’s journey and the lessons they learned to get where they are. How could we judge, or even worse pre-judge?

I confess I did compare myself in the beginning. I questioned if I was too old, or not prepared enough. Another killer thought was “there are too many coaches out there, and who would pay for my services”, and bla, bla, bla! The joy of learning, having an open mind and discovering my own talents for this profession were slipping out of my heart. Those feelings were discouraging me and I thank a friend who said, “Comparison is the killer of joy”. The hypothetical brick made me a bit dizzy and brought me to my senses. There is no need for comparison. I imagine that as coaches we are like Italian cooks making spaghetti and each one of us has our own sauce! This way the comparison went away because there is a taste for all kinds of sauces, but who doesn’t like spaghetti!!!

Let’s celebrate the beauty of all creatures and enjoy all the tasteful sauces out there
